Acute kidney failure

Acute kidney failure occurs when the kidneys suddenly stop working. This can occur over hours or few days and can last hours to a few months and up to a year. Often this condition is temporary. The cause may be disease, serious or sudden injury, poisons or chemicals in the system. Dialysis treatment supports the patient while the kidneys recover.
